We are Batala Bangor, a Samba-Reggae percussion band performing across North Wales, and we hold beginners’ sessions for new players once or twice a year. No experience is necessary—many of our players had never picked up a musical instrument before joining, though experienced drummers are also very welcome!
You would also be joining an international community of over 1000 Batala drummers and have the opportunity take part in Batala Mundo events, drumming with other Batala bands across the world.

Frequently asked questions
All you need to know about joining Batala Bangor!
We run dedicated beginner intake sessions once or twice a year. These give new players the best possible start, with focused teaching and support as you learn the basics together as a group.
Occasionally, we may invite experienced players to join outside of these sessions, e.g. if you already have a background in drumming or samba.
If you’re interested in joining, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch at bookings@batalabangor.com for more information about upcoming beginner sessions and how to get involved.
No. You don’t need prior drumming experience, just a sense of rhythm, a willingness to learn, and the ability to take direction from our musical team.
We rehearse on Tuesday evenings at Tregarth Community Centre (near Bangor).
There are also occasional weekend workshops.
We look for commitment, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude. Members are expected to attend regularly, practise between sessions, and put effort into improving and performing as part of the group.
We expect members to attend regularly, at a minimum 50% of rehearsals and as many gigs as they can. That said, we understand that work, health, and life commitments sometimes get in the way.
Gigs generally take place over the weekend at carnivals and events across North Wales, our busiest times of year are usually summer and Christmas.
Before joining us at gigs new players need to show that they know the music and can play to the standard required. Once they’re ready, they’ll be invited to take part in performances.
We provide:
- Ongoing training and support
- Access to drums for rehearsals and gigs
- Performance costume
We aim to keep costs as low as possible for our members. There is a monthly subscription which helps cover the running costs of the band.
To get you started, you’ll be able to use beginner kit (such as beaters and a belt) so you can try things out before deciding to buy your own. Drums are provided by the band.
Yes. The band is run by volunteers, and members are encouraged to contribute in different ways, whether that’s helping organise events, supporting new players, or taking on small roles.
Absolutely! We love having visitors from other Batala bands! You can email us at bookings@batalabangor.com or even better get in touch with us via our socials.
